How to Get Your Vehicle Hurricane Ready

posted on
  • In 2018 weather forecasters are predicting an increased chance for Hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico. This isn’t a reason to panic, it’s a wake-up call for the Preparing Your Vehicle for a Hurricaneresidents of Texas. With over 3,000 miles of shoreline, no one knows where the next hurricane will make landfall. All you can do is be ready.

There are several steps you can take to be prepared for inclement weather. You’ll want to have an emergency kit, protect your home, make plans for your pets, and maybe even check your insurance coverage. But what about your vehicle?

Most of us will evacuate during a Hurricane and you need to make sure your vehicle can get you out of harm’s way. Below is a list of the most important things to remember when evacuating and what vehicle maintenance you should have performed to prepare.

Fill Up with Gas

When it’s time to get out of Dodge, don’t forget the gas. There is no telling how long you might get stuck in traffic or if the weather will affect gas supplies. Make sure to fill up the tank and have a spare 10 gallons just in case.

Check Your Tires

The last thing you want to deal with is a flat or blown tire. Proper tire examination could save you a lot of hassle on the highway out of town. Ensuring you have correct tire pressure is vital. Your PSI should be between 30-35 and your tread should be at least 2/32 of an inch.

Replace Your Windshield Wipers

Don’t forget to inspect or replace your wiper blades. A fresh set of blades will be able to eliminate more water from your field of view. Also, make sure to pick up an extra set in case the wind snatches yours away.

Pack for Survival

It doesn’t matter in your staying in your home or evacuating in your vehicle, you need an emergency kit. Your emergency kit should include:

  • - Food and Water
  • - Battery powered or hand crank radio with extra batteries
  • - Local Maps
  • - Manual Can Opener
  • - Multi-Tool or Plyers
  • - Whistle
  • - First Aid Kit
  • - Flashlight
  • - Any required medications
  • - Matches
  • - Survival Blankets
  • - Cell phone chargers and battery backups

Take Pictures

That’s right, take lots and lots of pictures…. of your vehicle. For an easy insurance claim make sure you have photos of the inside and outside of your car. If you’re staying in your house these pictures could prove wind and flood damage. Traveling also possesses the same risks and it’s smart to prepare for the worst.
