What Makes a Tire Blow Out

posted on

Tire manufacturers spend an enormous amount of time and funding improving the puncture resistance of their products. Still, unless your car is equipped with high-end run-flat rubber, your tire has to keep the air on the inside to keep you rolling down the highway. And even with all the engineering prowess, tire makers devote to durability the occasional flat tire is inevitable.Flat Tire Repair in Harlingen, TX

Flat tires come in a variety of flavors, from instant and complete failure to a slow leak that you may not even notice until the morning you are in a hurry to get to a meeting or pick the kids up at school and find one corner of your ride sitting way too close to the pavement.

Small Leaks

With newer tires, most blowouts result from small punctures caused by running over a sharp object, like a nail or a staple. This can sometimes cause that agonizing and seemingly unexplainable slow leak. Car and tire manufacturers alike recommend checking tire pressure at least once a month. With a very slow leak, you will probably find a few extra psi missing from one tire each time you check. More recently, cars of all stripe have started to be made with pressure monitors that will warn you of a low tire. If the same one keeps setting off that warning, chances are you have something small in your tire. Generally, the culprit is very small and very deep in the tire, so deep that only a qualified tire service center can find it and repair it.

Bad Seals

A slow leak can also be caused by a bad bead seal. The area of the tire that touches the wheel and a damaged wheel rim or a faulty installation can cause air to slowly escape from the seal. Again, a qualified tire professional can remedy this by removing the tire and reinstalling it.

As aggravating as a slow leak can be they rarely leave you stranded. But a massive blowout will put you on the side of the road digging out your spare or calling roadside assistance. A catastrophic blow out is generally the fault of either hitting a large object at speed or the failure of the sidewall. Though you cannot always avoid hitting something, you can have your tires inspected for sidewall damage that can eventually cause a blowout. Damaging a sidewall usually causes a bubble or tear that your tire professional can easily identify. Damaged tires should be replaced immediately.

Old Tires

Last but not least, you may just have old, worn out tires. Once the tread is gone there is not much between the air in your tire and the outside world. Likewise, a tire that has been around for years can dry rot, which causes fissuring, cracking and eventual failure. Have one of our tire technicians at Pueblo Tires & Service check the date code on your tires and inspect them for age-related damage.
